Most cervical changes develop gradually, often preceded by human papillomavirus (HPV), which can affect cervical cells over time. Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can genuinely be prevented, not just caught early.
When it's recommended
- Recommended for all women of reproductive age on a regular basis, even without symptoms.
- Recommended more often for smokers, those with previously detected cell changes, an early start of sexual activity, a positive HPV test, weakened immunity, or a history of major gynecological surgery.
Treatment stages
First visit
A gynecologist consultation, an exam, sample collection (HPV test, Pap test), and a pelvic ultrasound.
Second visit
A discussion of the results and, if needed, planning next steps.
