Cataract microsurgery

Request a consultation

A cataract is clouding of the eye's natural lens, which makes the image blurry, colors less vivid and everyday tasks harder. The center performs phacoemulsification: the clouded lens is removed through a small incision and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL), an artificial lens. The lens is chosen individually, taking into account the state of your eyes, astigmatism and your vision needs at different distances. Before the operation the surgeon explains what the chosen option can do and how other conditions may affect the result.

When it's recommended

  • A diagnosed cataract reduces vision and interferes with reading, work, driving or daily tasks.
  • New glasses no longer give enough clarity.
  • Because of the clouded lens, contrast, color perception or vision at dusk has worsened.
  • The ophthalmologist recommends removing the cataract for other medical reasons.

Treatment stages

  1. Diagnostics

Examination of the lens, intraocular pressure, and assessment of the retina and optic nerve as far as the clarity of the optical media allows.

  2. Lens calculation and choice

Biometry and eye measurements to calculate the IOL power. The surgeon discusses the viewing distances you want, any need for glasses and correcting astigmatism.

  3. Preparation and plan

The clinic specifies the tests and consultations required and agrees the anesthesia, date and estimate. Some lens models may need to be ordered in advance.

  4. Surgery

Phacoemulsification of the clouded lens with implantation of the chosen IOL. The approach depends on the individual eye.

  5. Post-operative follow-up

Follow-up exams, prescribed drops and advice on activity and hygiene. Glasses are fitted if needed once vision has stabilized.

Benefits

  • Removal of the clouded lens

The operation removes the optical obstacle caused by the cataract. The potential for visual recovery is judged by the state of the retina, optic nerve and other structures.

  • An individual choice of optics

You can discuss lenses with different optical properties, including for correcting astigmatism or extending the range of clear vision.

  • A consistent treatment plan

Examination, IOL choice, surgery and follow-up form one route agreed with the patient.

Timeline

The date of surgery, time at the clinic and the schedule of check-ups are set after diagnostics. If both eyes need treatment, the order and the interval between operations are agreed with the surgeon. When planning a trip from another city, allow for post-operative follow-up and the possible delivery time of the IOL.

What's included in the price

Calculation structure: surgical fee (depends on the IOL) + the mandatory 4,000 UAH package of pre-operative calculation and anesthesia support (IOL calculation with the surgeon 1,000 UAH + anesthesia support 3,000 UAH), once per operation on one eye. The surgical fee covers phacoemulsification with implantation of the chosen IOL, the operating team, disposables, medication and one month of follow-up. Initial comprehensive diagnostics (1,300–1,500 UAH) and laboratory tests are paid separately. Complicated cases: an additional 3,500–10,000 UAH where indicated, giving an overall estimated range with the package of 32,500–102,500 UAH per eye; the surgeon sets the exact amount. The result depends on the condition of the retina and optic nerve: replacing the lens does not cure diseases of those structures.

  • How the artificial lens is chosen

Choosing starts with examination and measurements of the eye. The doctor then asks at which distances you need to see: reading, a computer screen, driving, work with small details. The state of the retina, optic nerve and cornea, and any astigmatism, all matter. A monofocal lens gives a chosen focal distance, so glasses may be needed for other tasks. Extended depth of focus and multifocal lenses offer a different balance of benefits and limits. A toric component helps correct the relevant corneal astigmatism. The final model is decided after talking to the surgeon.

  • Preparation and after the operation

Bring previous reports, a list of medicines and any existing test results. The clinic specifies the tests and consultations required. Do not stop regular medicines on your own: changes are agreed with the doctor. A custom-ordered IOL may need extra time before the operation. After surgery you need the prescribed drops and follow-up exams; how fast vision improves and stabilizes is individual. During recovery the doctor may limit activity and recommend eye protection. The final need for glasses is judged once vision has stabilized. Later the posterior capsule that holds the IOL can cloud over: this needs an exam, and where indicated the doctor recommends YAG capsulotomy, a separate service with its own estimate.

Common questions

Do I have to wait for the cataract to "ripen"?
The timing of surgery is discussed when the clouding affects daily life or there are other medical indications. The decision depends on the examination and the patient's needs.
Can vision cloud over again after the lens is replaced?
The posterior capsule that holds the IOL can cloud over later. This needs an exam, and where indicated the doctor recommends YAG capsulotomy, a separate service with its own estimate.
